About Get on the Bus: A day in the GOTB program runs as follows: at the end of the school day, GOTB players are met at their school by GOTB staff and given a healthy snack. Tutoring and homework help is available to all participants. Afterwards, they are transported by bus to fields to participate in a recreational program. The kids practice once a week and play in the recreational games on Saturdays. At the end of the GOTB season, several program participants may be identified and placed on local travel teams at the club level in order to have the same opportunity to continue to participate at a higher level that others may have. Funded by charitable donations, the program provides full uniform kits, including jerseys, shorts, socks, cleats and a soccer ball, at no cost to players. All recreational program participation fees are waived for GOTB participants, resulting in a completely free program.
“The GOTB players are receiving important experience and life lessons on and off the field through this program and being part of a team instills confidence and self-value in each player,” GOTB Director of Operations Amanda Buckler wrote. “The parents and families of GOTB participants also benefit greatly from the program, coming to see their children play in real soccer games, in uniform, each Saturday, and being part of the local sports community that so many take for granted because the cost and transportation barriers so often are not noticed. Breaking down these barriers enables more of our community to be a part of the club soccer experience.” Through this partnership FutPost.com will enable 100 kids to participate in the program for free across the country including Denver and the Bay Area of Northern California.

Ellicott City Soccer Club Brings Get on the Bus Program to Deep Run and Talbott Springs Elementary Schools
February, 2019
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) has partnered with the Ellicott City Soccer Club (CiTY) to provide opportunities for students to participate in after-school programming that promotes an active lifestyle. The partnership was formalized with an official partnership signing on Tuesday, January 29 at Talbott Springs Elementary School in Columbia, Maryland.
Under the terms of the agreement, CiTY will offer a free six-week Get on the Bus after-school soccer program for fourth and fifth grade students at Deep Run and Talbott Springs Elementary Schools. The Get on the Bus program provides students with homework assistance, soccer apparel, transportation and a recreational soccer program. HCPSS staff will collaborate with CiTY staff to provide recommendations for educational games, homework help and healthy activities for students.
Deep Run Elementary School Principal Denise Lancaster, Talbott Springs Elementary School Principal Nancy Thompson and Assistant Principal Paul Linkins joined Ellicott City Soccer Club Executive Director Tim Ryerson and Business Development Manager Amanda Buckler to sign the formal partnership agreement at the January 29 event.
The Ellicott City Soccer Club offers training and clinic programs for all playing levels and ages through its recreational, travel and “playground soccer” programs.
The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office has united schools with more than 1,000 businesses and community organizations to enhance the educational experience of Howard County students. Partnerships benefit schools, businesses and the entire community by leveraging the resources of all participants. Partners may commit human or financial resources or other support.
Howard Co. Program Provides Funding For Low-Income Families To Afford Youth Sports
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A group in Howard County is making it more affordable for some children to play sports.
If you’re a kid who wants to learn sports, Rob Ryerson is your man.
He and his brother run the Ellicott City Soccer Club.
A ball, jersey, cleats, and some other gear along with travel costs add up. Between registration, gear and travel, it could cost a parent $500 to $1,000 — money some families can’t afford.
For instance, the state says 42 percent of Deep Run Elementary students are low income.
The families of 41 kids from Deep Run have brand new gear but aren’t paying a dime.
“Think about it, we’re giving kids the opportunity to play soccer with us who would not be here,” Ryerson said.”It’s called Get on the Bus program.”
Sarita Winchester says her daughter is playing with City. They’re here because the Horizon Foundation paid for her daughter and 40 other fourth- and fifth-graders.
“I’m thankful for that. Most programs are so expensive that we can’t keep our kids active and something to do after school because it’s so expensive,” Winchester said.
If the funding continues, Get on the Bus will continue.
“Some of these kids would not have the opportunity to be here. It’s a fully funded program, so it doesn’t cost these kids from Deep Run Elementary School anything to be a part of this program,” Ryerson said.
The goal of the Horizon Foundation is to make people in Howard County healthier.

Get On the Bus Program in Maryland – Grassroots Futures Award Winner!
WED, AUG. 15, Glen Burnie, MD – The Maryland State Youth Soccer Association is proud to grant the first annual MSYSA Grassroots Futures Award to the Ellicott City Soccer Club (CiTY) for their excellence in grassroots programming.
CiTY Executive Director Tim Ryerson had a vision. That vision came to life in the spring of 2018, when CiTY launched their Get On the Bus (GOTB) program in an effort to remove the economic and transportation barriers that prevent some children from low-income Howard County families from participating in youth soccer. 41 players qualified for and participated in the program’s inaugural season.
A day in the program runs as follows: at the end of the school day, GOTB players are met at their school by CiTY staff and given a healthy snack. Tutoring and homework help is available to all participants. Afterwards, they are transported by bus to fields to participate in the CiTY recreational program. The kids practice once a week and play in the recreational games on Saturdays.
Funded by charitable donations to CiTY, the program provides full uniform kits, including jerseys, shorts, socks, cleats and a soccer ball, at no cost to players. All recreational program participation fees are waived for GOTB participants, resulting in a completely free program.
Licensed professional coaches work with the recreational program, ensuring that each CiTY player at every level receives quality training. At the end of the first GOTB season, several program participants tried out for travel teams at the club and received offers.
The program is currently led by CiTY Director of Recreational Programs Wade Whitney and Director of Soccer Operations and Player Development Rob Ryerson with help from volunteers from the soccer club and school community.
“The GOTB players are receiving important experience and life lessons on and off the field through this program, and being part of a team instills confidence and self-value in each player,” CiTY Director of Partnerships Amanda Buckler wrote. “The parents and families of GOTB participants also benefit greatly from the program, coming to see their children play in real soccer games, in uniform, each Saturday, and being part of the local sports community that so many take for granted because the cost and transportation barriers so often are not noticed in Howard County. Breaking down these barriers enables more of our community to be a part of the club soccer experience.”
