What is self-control?

Self-control means being able to manage your emotions and actions, even when you are excited, angry, or upset. It means making good choices and staying calm in difficult situations.

Staying Calm.

Keeping your cool and not getting angry if the referee makes a call you disagree with.

Managing Your Emotions.

Not letting frustration or excitement cause you to act out, like yelling or arguing with another player.

Follow the Rules.

Playing by the rules and not cheating, even if you really want to win.

Being Patient.

Waiting your turn and not interrupting or pushing others during practice or games.

Accepting Mistakes.

If you make a mistake, accepting it and trying to do better next time instead of getting upset.

STAR- Stands for Stop, Think, Anticipate, and Respond. When something happens that frustrates your or makes you mad Stop! Don’t respond until you stop and think first. Try to think about all of the possible actions that you can take in this situation. Next, anticipate or look into the future for each possible action. What is the likely outcome of each action? Finally, respond in the best way. In the heat of the moment, you may be unlikely to go through all four steps until you have practiced and internalized STAR. However, if you can just stop for a second or two before reacting, you are much more likely to make a better choice.

Out of sight, out of mind- This is a strategy to remove things from your immediate environment that create temptations you want to avoid. If video games or social media creates a distraction that prevents you from studying for a test or practicing your soccer moves, put your games or phone in a place you can’t see it.
